Love (1985) Corita Kent
Born Frances Elizabeth Kent in Fort Dodge, Iowa in 1918, Sister Corita Kent was a nun and art teacher at the Immaculate Heart Convent and College in Hollywood in the 1950s and '60s who became famous for her silk-screen prints. Her artworks contained peaceful messages taken from her religion and were used to protest US brutality in Vietnam as well as the racism and poverty that she saw in LA. Her attitude to printmaking has been compared to political pamphleteering, preferring to make artworks containing messages that could be easily read, reproduced and circulated en masse. Her biggest achievement in spreading her message of peace is said to be her Love stamp, commissioned by the United States Postal Service in 1985 which sold in excess of 700 million.
