Project 3.1

Love (1985) Corita Kent

Born Frances Elizabeth Kent in Fort Dodge, Iowa in 1918, Sister Corita Kent was a nun and art teacher at the Immaculate Heart Convent and College in Hollywood in the 1950s and '60s who became famous for her silk-screen prints. Her artworks contained peaceful messages taken from her religion and were used to protest US brutality in Vietnam as well as the racism and poverty that she saw in LA. Her attitude to printmaking has been compared to political pamphleteering, preferring to make artworks containing messages that could be easily read, reproduced and circulated en masse. Her biggest achievement in spreading her message of peace is said to be her Love stamp, commissioned by the United States Postal Service in 1985 which sold in excess of 700 million.

PBP3 Participant - Alison Miles

As a writer and librarian, my life revolves around the connectedness of words and people. Words can change moods, spark ideas, recall memories, and connect people. Stamps and words have a long history together, and I'm looking forward to bringing some of these elements together for the Penny Black Project.

PBP3 Participant - Sonja Barfoed

Hello, I'm Sonja. I'm a librarian and artist based in Canberra.

I'm looking forward to the project's focus on process, and the possibilities of methodical rhythms whilst drawing, sewing and painting.

PBP3 Participant - Laura Kennedy

I have just moved to Tasmania and am looking forward to sinking my teeth into some new creative opportunities and the segregated submissions sound just like what I need to get the creative juices flowing.

PBP3 Participant - Kate Kruimink

I'm Kate, a 25-year-old student and semi-somewhat-artist. I live in Hobart and occasionally write things down and send them off to magazines. My life's goal is probably to finish my degree and then undo all that good work by refusing to analyse anything ever again.

PBP3 - Kristy Sippel

I’m always trying something different, always looking for something new to do in the art-craft realm. My work involves very little creative input so I need to give my imagination somewhere to roam, and given that I used to collect stamps as a kid, this seemed like as good a place as any. I’m hoping to get myself out of a creative rut by completing Round 3 of the Penny Black Project – loosely structured projects with just enough info to start the ideas generating, deadlines to meet, and something to personally achieve. Sounds like just what I need!!
